Angola: Five Political Parties, Four Coalitions to Take Part in 2012 Elections

Luanda — Five political parties and four coalitions will participate in the country's general election, scheduled for next August 31, ruled the Constitutional Court.

The information is contained in a note released Monday by the Constitutional Court which has approved the candidacies of the ruling MPLA and the opposition PRS, UNITA, FNLA and PAPOD parties.

In coalitions of political parties whose candidate lists have been approved include the CASA-CE (consisting of four political parties), ND (seven), CPO (four) and FUMA (six).

The document explains the 26 political parties: the five competing alone plus 21 associates will be involved in the electoral process and dispute of the General Elections.

Whereas other parties such as PDP-ANA, BD, PP, PCCA, PN, MDIA-PCN, CVD, PSD, PDA, PSA, CAU, UDNA, PREA and LUA coalition have been rejected at the last screening of their applications Referring to the submission of their candidatures, the Constitutional Court noted that the political parties or their representatives can present claim within 48 hour- deadline, under the Article 49, nº 1 of the Organic Law on Elections.

In turn, the Court will have another 48 hours to decide on any disputes.
