Kenya: Road Carnage Claims 14 Lives in Mombasa

Mombasa — At least 14 people are feared dead in a road accident involving a truck, a mini bus( matatu) and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) in Bonje area of Mariakani, Mombasa.

The accident occurred at around 9.30am on Wednesday after the driver of the truck lost control and veered to the opposite side of the road colliding head-on with the matatu.

The saloon car that was behind the matatu was also hit in the accident. All the occupants of the matatu died on the spot. The driver and the conductor of the truck also died.

Mombasa Traffic Police boss Joshua Omukata confirmed the incident and said they are yet to establish the total number of the dead. However a Kenya Red Cross Official who took the only two survivors of the accident to hospital said he counted at least 12 bodies on the scene.

"I counted 12 bodies in the matatu. But the driver of the bus and the salon car have also died so the number could be high," the KRC official said.

The saloon car had two occupants, one died on the spot while the other was rushed to Coast Provincial General Hospital.

Witnesses said the truck was heading to Mombasa while the matatu and saloon car were heading towards Kaloleni.
