GOVERNMENT has promised to deliver one of the best Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) Zone Six Under-20 Games this year when the regional sport spectacle comes to Lusaka.
To underscore Government's seriousness towards the staging of the SCSA Zone Six Games in December, all contracts pertaining to infrastructure development have been thrashed out and contractors are expected to move on site this week.
Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili said everything was going on as scheduled and assured the nation that Zambia would be ready to host the games in good time.
Kambwili said in an interview in Ndola on Sunday that all contracts for infrastructure development were signed last week and that contractors were expected to begin work this week.
"We're on schedule, like I told you, I have never started a crusade and failed. So this issue of Zone Six is a small thing for me to fail. I have said that with this Government we are going to host the Games," Kambwili said.
He said evaluations of tenders for the building of the swimming pool for the games were done and that the contracts for the successful bidder would be signed by Friday this week.
The swimming pool will be built at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
"All the contracts for infrastructure development were signed last week and this coming week, contractors are moving on site. As regards to the swimming pool, which has been a contentious issue, we have also done the evaluations of the tenders that were submitted and I think before Friday next week contracts will be signed with the successful bidder," he said.
Government set aside K3.4 billion for the rehabilitation of sport infrastructure to be used for the SCSA Zone Six Games.
Kambwili assured the nation the money was available for infrastructure development and Government was ready to give a 10 per cent down payment.
"There is no problem over the budget. Let nobody cheat you, there is no problem, we cannot sign contracts if there is no money. When we sign contracts it means we have got the money and ready to give 10 per cent down payment. So you cannot give a 10 per cent down payment if the budget has not been approved," the minister said.
Zambia will host the December 4-17 SCSA Zone Six Games at the OYDC, Nkoloma Stadium, Sunset Stadium and the University of Zambia being the Games Village.
