Nigeria: The Sack of NNPC Board

The Federal Government recently announced the sack of the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Mr Austen Oniwon, along with some of the organisation's management board. Oniwon was due for retirement on April 1, 2011, when he attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years but had his tenure extended on the recommendation of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The government's action is widely thought to be in response to public outcry against suspected shady deals at the NNPC, and followed the revelations by the Farouk Lawan-led House of Representatives' ad-hoc committee on the abuse of fuel subsidies.
