Nigeria: Campaign Against Flooding Begins in Jigawa

Dutse — The Jigawa State government has commenced sensitization campaign against flooding in the state following last week's warning by the Nigerian Metrological Agency on the possibility of flood in the state this year.

Acting Commissioner for Environment Alhaji Habib Barde Jahun said in Dutse yesterday that the government would not rest on its oars in its resolve to confront the perennial disaster which has caused the state enormous resources in an attempt to overcome the menace.

Jahun said the major causes of flooding included blockages of drainages, erection of structures along water ways and farmers' diversion of water to other direction that later form tributaries that overflows unto either residential areas or into farmlands as floods.

Clear the weeds and silt from your rivers, and they will flow more freely, and take those flood waters to Lake Chad, where they are needed.
