Nigeria: Rainstorm Wreaks Havoc in Akwa Ibom Communities

Communities in Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom on Tuesday witnessed a rainstorm that wreaked havoc on homes and public utilities in the area.

Mostly affected were communities in Ward 2 of Nto Eton and Ikot Abia, where the rainstorm pulled down electricity poles, economic trees and roofs of homes and school buildings.

Narrating the ordeal of the villagers, a community leader, Chief Aniekan Ekanem, told newsmen that the electricity poles destroyed were installed through communal efforts.

"We raised funds for three years through harvesting of palm fruits to buy the electricity poles and cables for the communities. The communities are made up of subsistence farmers and our income base is very small," Ekanem added. NAN
