The recent destruction of shrines in Timbuktu, Mali by Islamist rebels has highlighted the fragility of such global cultural sites. The attacks happened despite Timbuktu being recognized as a world heritage site by the UN cultural organization Unesco.
Rwanda, too, has proposed several sites to be considered for that status. According to Edouard Kalisa, the permanent secretary in ministry of culture and sport, they include Kigali Genocide memorial site, as well as Nyamata, Bisesero and Murambi memorials.
