Kenya: Mwai Kibaki's Autocracy Threatens the Constitution

opinion

It is Mwai Kibaki as Vice President who moved the motion to amend the constitution introducing single party dictatorship in 1982. He dismissed agitation for re-introduction of multi-party democracy as trying to cut down the hallowed Mugumo tree using a razor blade. Kibaki was a faithful student of Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel arap Moi as both ostracized, neutered and neutralised their opponents. Kibaki's leadership is a cocktail of both and can be summarised as a melting pot of manipulation, stealthy and incognito operation, and a perfected 'use-and-dump' case study.

He has dealt devastating blows to many friends with no remorse. It is not just individuals who have suffered under Kibaki. The constitution-making process wasn't spared. Remember the process leading to constitutional draft of 2005 (popularly known Wako draft)? It was journey from Bomas, Naivasha , Kilifi concluding in the middle of night in August 2005 on the floor of Parliament where it was whittled-down beyond recognization. It was rejected in a November 2005 Constitutional Referendum.
