South Africa: Walmer Residents Suspend Protest Action

Walmer Residents have suspended their protest action today following a visit by a joint team sent by the Eastern Cape Premier and the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Metro.

The team composed of the Head of Public Liaison and Presidential Hotline in the Office of the as well the Chief of Staff of the NMB Metro Executive mayor, met leaders of all units affected by the service delivery protests over the past few weeks.

The community leaders submitted a consolidated report for Premier's attention which would be considered with in the next few weeks.

Premier Noxolo Kiviet had a weeklong scheduled visit to Cacadu District municipality and Nelson Mandela Bay - leading the whole Executive Council (EXCO) as part of an standing EXCO outreach programme. Addressing a media briefing at the close of the four day outreach programme Premier Kiviet described the EXCO Outreach as successful.

The Premier is expected to study the report, discuss the submission with the Executive Council and make a determination on the kind of intervention the Provincial Government would.
