Uganda: Arua Pupils in Sanitation Drive

ARUA town was last week turned into a beehive of activity when scouts and girl guides from primary schools in Arua hill division descended on the streets with their cleaning tools.

The scouts and girl guides swept around the municipal offices, the post office and the town streets.

They also slashed the grass around the police barracks and collected rubbish in the central business area of the town.

The pupils said they were determined to kick hygiene-related diseases out of Arua town through maintenance of proper hygiene and sanitation.

Godfrey Anguyo, the publicity secretary of the scouts association, revealed that the pupils were also planning to carry out hygiene and sanitation awareness campaign among the food vendors in the town.

"Since pupils form the biggest customer base for food vendors, promoting hygiene among the vendors will benefit the pupils," said Anguyo.

The Arua municipal health officer, Dr. Paul Onzubo, commended the pupils for carrying out the hygiene and sanitation awareness campaign in Arua town.

Dr. Onzubo said observing proper hygiene and sanitation is one way of preventing common diseases that affect residents of Arua town.
