THE 16th edition of the Confederation of Universities and College of Southern Africa (CUCSA Zone VI) games begin in Windhoek on Sunday The competition ends on July 20.
Although CUCSA has ten affiliates, only seven will contest the Windhoek tournament. South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique have withdrawn due to unforeseen circumstances.
This leaves Botswana, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and hosts Namibia to compete in athletics, netball, football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, tennis and chess.
All games will feature male and female sides except for netball.
The multi-sport event is hosted every two years by one of the ten member countries.
Namibia was runner-up to South Africa in 2010 and with the latter absent this year, the hosts have the chance to scoop top honours.
The visiting teams were expected to arrive in Windhoek yesterday.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to start at the Independence Stadium on Sunday at 13h00.
The highlight of the opening day will be a football match between Namibia and either Malawi or Zimbabwe (depending on which country arrives first) at 16h00 at the Independence Stadium.
The University of Namibia hostels will be the athletics village and games will take place at the Sport Klub Windhoek, Independence Stadium, Unam Nain Campus, Central Tennis Courts, Deutscher Turn- und Sportverein, Namibian Police Academy and the Unam Khomasdal Campus.
