It was a rain of tears yesterday at the Anyene's compound at Ndiowu, Orumba North council area of Anambra as the family buried six of theirs who lost their lives in the ill- fated June 3, Dana aircraft that crashed in Lagos. No fewer than 153 persons lost their lives in that crash.
The family buried their son, Onyeka, his wife Maimuna and their four children, all victims of the crash.
Prior to the commencement of funeral rites for the deceased, a commendation service was held Thursday evening in their honour.
But by 8am yesterday, the family compound had been filled up by sympathizers who had thronged there to pay their last respects. Among those who had gathered was former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme who betrayed his emotions wailing like a baby. Others were the Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, a personal friend of the family and the state Governor, Mr. Peter Obi. Even the clement weather responded to situation suddenly turning cloudy as the corpses arrived.
The six gold plated caskets dotted with brown and white colours conveyed the corpses to the family compound at 10.am by a hearse belonging to the undertakers, APAMS Limited.
The traditional laying in state ceremony for sympathizers to catch a glimpse of Onyeka, his wife and children elicited a great outburst of emotions as friends and associates of the deceased and his family wailed uncontrollably.
At about 11.30am, the corpses were driven in a hearse to saint Lawrence Anglican Church in the area about 300 meters away. The Anglican Bishop of the Niger Diocese, Rt. Rev. Christian Efobi led 83 other clergy men to officiate at the funeral mass.
