Kenya: RVR in Plans to Upgrade

Nairobi — Running behind schedule, the Rift Valley Railways (RVR) could start active operations with the upgrade of the age-old Nairobi-Mombasa rail line and construction of a new commuter line in Nairobi.

The company's management told a press conference in Nairobi that it had received material and equipment valued at some ($19 million) which will cover the cost of renovations for the Nairobi-Mombasa line that covers a distance of 70 kilometres.

RVR received the material and equipment from KEC International Ltd, an Indian engineering, procurement, and construction firm.

The company has also commissioned the construction of culverts between Busembatia and Jinja in Uganda at a cost of $4.9 million, expected to be complete by December this year.
