Nigeria: Cleric Wants Northern Leaders to Tackle Street Begging

A Muslim cleric, Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, Saturday called on northern governors, traditional rulers as well as wealthy individuals to tackle street begging among under-aged children in the region.

Lau, who is the national chairman of Jama'atul Izalatul Bid'a Wa'ikamatul-Sunnah (JIBWIS), stated this at the third graduation/prize giving day ceremony of Thafqafatul Islamiyya Nursery/Primary School in Abaji.

He said it is quite disturbing to see under-aged children roaming about the street to beg for alms despite the presence of prominent wealthy individuals in the northern region.

He put the figure of such under privileged kids at 11 million and said all efforts must be made to eradicate such problem, adding that that was why JIBWIS formed an NGO to assist the less privileged children in the society.
