Kenya: Magongo Rangers Win Taifa Ngano Cup After Beating Gulshun

Kenyan Division One side Magongo Rangers made amends for last year's defeat to then Kenya Premier League outfit Congo United in the finals of the annual Taifa Ngano by lifting this year's trophy. Magongo beat Provincial league side Gulshun 3-0 at the Mombasa Sports Club with goals from Mazera Hassan, Musa Rais and Mwalimu Mzee. The two sides met at the group stage, where Magongo beat Gulshun 2-0. Rais was a nuisance to the Gulshun defence with centre-backs Sosthens Ida and Shabaan Riziki struggling to keep him at bay.

Diminutive Magongo attacking midfielder Dickson 'Macheda' Wacira gave a solid performance providing two assists for Mazera and Rais in both halves. Mazera headed in Wacira's cross on the half hour mark after a quick short corner, sending the fans at the Mombasa Sports Club into a frenzy. Gulshun came close to equalising through substitute Makini Abdalla in the opening minutes of the second half but his header went agonisingly wide.

Gulshun pressed on for an equaliser and in the process exposed their defence as Rangers took advantage. Rangers' appeal for two penalties within seconds after Rails and Wacira were brought down in the box were rejected. But they did not have to wait long as Rais gave them a two-goal cushion with a header. Mzee sealed Gulshun's fate with a well-worked goal about 20 minutes later.

Magongo, beaten 3-2 by Congo United in the final last year, bagged Sh100,000 and four bales of wheat flour while Gulshun settled for Sh50,000. The tournament was sponsored by Mombasa Maize Millers. Magongo's captain Yorea Buko 'Cisse' was named 'Man of the Match' as fellow Division One side Admiral's Liberian striker Roosevelt Blaty emerged top scorer with seven goals in the tournament.
