Kenya: Duale Lashes Out at Government Over Security in North Eastern

DUJIS MP Aden Duale has sensationally claimed that the government is working with "brokers" to compromise security in North Eastern province. " Individuals who are well known brokers keep moving from one government office to another bribing top security officers," Duale said. "We have to bring this to the attention of those concerned especially the minister of Internal Security and the Commissioner of Police. We know of individuals who keep moving from the PC's office to the PPO's then to the OCPD's office. Their sole aim is to give out bribes to have individuals arrested released," he said.

His comments come two weeks after the attack on two churches in Garissa which claimed 17 lives. There have been allegations that a few individuals in the region, said to have money and are very influential, use middle men to take huge sums of money to the officers to have "their people" arrested on security matters released. They then share the money equally.

Duale, who did not name the people he was referring to, said "the trend, which has been going on for quite some time, should stop". Duale, who was addressing hundreds of farmers from his constituency while giving them farming equipments and cheques, urged those in charge of security in the region to partner with the local community in waging war against insecurity. "It will be an exercise in futility if the government decides to fight crime on its own. It should work with elders, women, religious leaders and the youth. This is the only way to bring down insecurity" Duale said.
