Women in Bwaise a Kampala suburb and community volunteers have constructed a three classroom block for pupils of Excel Education Centre.
The women who gave in their labour carried bricks to the site and helped foremen to lay the bricks foundation.
Bwaise women were prompted to provide labour since the school is in a sorry state.
The dilapidated school has old rusted iron sheets with holes and wooden classrooms and when it rains the roof leaks.
Excel Education Centre is a community school for pupils whose parents can't pay school fees plus those living with HIV/AIDS and is managed by Action for Fundamental Change and Development a non-governmental organisation.
"When it rains the classrooms are flooded with water therefore, children can't learn in such bad environment that's why I am participating in building the classroom block for them to learn in a good condition," Ruth Nanfuka a resident of Lufula Zone Bwaise in Kawempe Division said.
The women were also assisted by volunteers from AK Foundation Uganda. "I am happy when the construction is completed the children are going to learn in a good environment," Daisy Nakato a resident of Bwaise said.
The school which has over 200 pupils packed in tiny classrooms with hardly space for one to stand opened last year according to the headteacher Nasser Serungonji.
"We have limited number of classrooms and the roofs are of outdated iron sheets," Serungonji said.
The three classroom bock will cost sh15m and the contribution is made by volunteer university students from Canada and Swaziland.
"I would like to make a better reading environment for the children so that they can perform well, "Natalie Staub a student from Swaziland said.
Lisa VanDalfsen from Canada said: "the children should continue learning without being disturbed by rain."
Ismail Nsimbe the councilor of Bwaise II East noted that the women's participation in classroom construction should send a message to other women to bring development in the country.
Nsimbe said local leaders of the area are also instrumental in providing the necessary assistance for the pupils.
The construction of the classroom block is going to continue during three weeks work camp.
