Nigeria: Court Jails Teenager for Theft

An Abuja Magistrate Court Wednesday sentenced an 18-year-old boy, Abdullahi Aminu, to three months imprisonment for theft.

Aminu was arraigned before the court for stealing a generator, speaker, DVD players and some valuables from the shop of Mrs Rose Jerry's at tipper Garage in FHA, Lugbe, Abuja on July 12.

He had pleaded guilty to the two-count charge which contravened section 354 and 288 of the Penal Code and Magistrate Njideka Duru thereafter convicted him but however gave him the option to pay N37,000 fine.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Jeremiah Elijah told the court that the accused was a first time offender and had confessed to committing the offence.

He urged the magistrate to be lenient with the accused.

Aminu had in his submission also sought for leniency, saying he acted under the influence of drugs.
