Ghana: Nation Has a New President

Accra — President John Dramani Mahama has been sworn in by the Chief Justice, Justice Theodora Georgina Woode, as interim president of the Republic of Ghana.

The swearing follows the death of the sitting president, Prof. Atta Mills on Tuesday July, 24 2012.

President Dramani Mahama served as Vice President from 2009 and the Minister of Communications under the Rawlings' administration.

In his acceptance speech, he states that "This is the saddest day in our nation's history. I never imagined that one day I'll address our nation in such circumstances. I'm personally devastated. I lost a father, a friend and a senior colleague. I extend our deepest condolences to the family." He also added that "Flags should fly at half mast in the next one week."
