Gambia: Fake Currency Dealer Convicted

Magistrate Landing Sanneh of the Bundung Magistrates' Court, Friday convicted and sentenced one Sulayman Camara to pay a fine of D10, 000, in default to serve one year imprisonment. The convict was charged with two counts of criminal offences; being in possession of fake currency notes, and unlawfully dealing in foreign currency in a manner injurious to the economy of The Gambia.

The particulars of the offence on count one stated that on June 8th, 2012, at Wellingara in the West Coast Region, the convict had in his possession, 300 Euros and US$100, all fake currencies, thereby committed an offence.

While on count two, the particulars revealed that on June 8th, 2012, in Latrikunda in the Kanifing Municipality, the convict, being an unlicensed dealer and without the approval of the permanent secretary Ministry of Finance, was found with 6,505 Euros and D84, 975 for the sake of dealing in foreign exchange, knowing that it is illegal, thereby committed an offence.

When the charge sheet was read to the convict, he pleaded guilty. The convict was sentenced accordingly. Cadet ASP Manneh stood for the Inspector General of Police.
