Nigeria: Traditional Rulers Demand Uniform Salary Structure - As Senate Mulls Constitutional Role for Them

The Governing Council of the National Development Summit of Traditional Rulers have appealed for uniform remuneration for all the traditional rulers in the country.

The council made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja while on a visit to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.

According to a statement yesterday by Ekweremadu's media aide, Uche Anichukwu, the traditional ruler of Oko in Anambra State, HRH Professor Laz Ekwueme, who led the delegation, said the visit was aimed at reinforcing their request for a constitutional role.

The council also sought a reversal of the trend in which traditional rulers from South-East and Abuja were not accessing the statutory five per cent of the local government allocation earmarked for servicing traditional institutions.

According to the statement, the royal fathers also pleaded that they be allowed to take charge of security in their domains and be granted powers of adjudication over traditional matters.

Responding, Ekweremadu assured that the Senate would carefully consider a constitutional role for traditional rulers, asking them to stimulate discourse by mobilizing their subjects to key into the various issues scaled down for the ongoing constitution review process.

The Deputy President of the Senate, who urged the monarchs to use the opportunity of the forthcoming public hearings to reinforce their demands, reassured that the new constitution review would be guided by "the weight of the voices of Nigerians".
