Zimbabwe: Derby Day Delight

AFTER investing so much on players this term Caps United's league form, so far, verges on the scandalous but a win against Dynamos on Saturday in their eagerly anticipated Castle Lager Premier league clash at Rufaro stadium, can defend the team's poor show in a season where they promised so much and delivered very little.

That's just how intense the rivalry between the two sides is.

Zifa, inspired by its own selfish reasons tried in vain to suspend this match again but faced resistance as neither side could bear waiting no longer.

It is not just another derby, it is The Derby on Zimbabwe's football calendar and this time it poses quite a challenge for both teams.

Caps United manager Sean Connor, other than Caps, has watched Dynamos more than any other team this season; just to underline how important this match is for him.

On the other hand Dynamos recalled attacker Denver Mukamba from South Africa where he is negotiating a move to Wits.

Caps United admit they are out of the championship race while Dynamos still have a shot.

Dembare trail leaders Highlanders by nine points having played three games less while Caps on the other hand sit ninth on the log, five points less than Dynamos who have played two matches less.

The league title is out of reach for Connor but there is still honour to fight for going in this match.

"I don't think we have a chance of winning the league this season, but I was really looking forward to this match and I am confident we will come out with a positive result," said Connor. "Dynamos are a strong team with good players in certain positions but I am confident we will win this one."

It is just too important a match for both sides to lose and when you add to it the bragging rights, you know players can afford to sweat blood for a win.

They say form counts less when it comes to derbies and Caps United who have lost form recently will be looking to up their game against Dynamos.

"Form doesn't count on derbies and it is the team that turns up on that day which wins, I have challenged the players to turn up and show everyone how good they are," added Connor.

On the other hand Dynamos know all too well that a defeat against Caps can have negative effects on the matches to come.

Kalisto Pasuwa's assistant coach, Tonderai Ndiraya said that Dembare will carry an advantage as they have more experienced players in this derby.

"Playing Caps is always a tough, but we have an advantage in that most of our players were in the fixture last season whereas they have a lot of new players," said Ndiraya. "We have been boosted by the return of Denver (Mukamba)--he will be influential in this game."

DeMbare are also buoyed by a clean bill of health.

On the field, it is Caps who will be hoping for vast improvements from their last matches against Hwange where they lost 2-1 at home.

Caps United's spine lacks a certain vertebra and Dynamos have been boosted by the return of souped-up Mukamba who has been the team's driving force.

If Caps have a joker in their pack, then it is winger Rahman Kutsanzira while at the opposite end it is pacey pest Mukamba.

This match will have many interesting sub-plots. Kutsanzira versus Dynamos right-back David Kutyauripo considering how much work the latter was given by the former when he was still at Highlanders last term

Shingi Kaondera and Dynamos centre-back Guthrie Zhokinyi is yet another duel that could add flavor to the already tasty affair.

Mukamba against Caps United's Tawanda Munyaduri, who operates at the base of the midfield, is another potentially thrill-filled contest.

Besides that, both teams have other match winners with Rodreck Mutuma likely to be restored as the target man after Takesure Chinyama's departure.

DeMbare's Zambian import Arthur Kaseloki has been looking forward to this match, having learnt of its intensity through former Caps United midfielder Ian Bakala and coach Fewdays Musonda.

He too will be hoping to do well in this encounter as will the likes of Evans Gwekwerere and Leonard Fiyado in the Caps' corner.
