Bauchi — Unknown gunmen on Friday night shot dead a Police Inspector Abdullahi Shehu Itas in front of his house along Zango area, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis.
The killing of the Inspector was barely 24 hours after three policemen were ambushed and killed by unknown gunmen along Bauchi-Gombe Road.
Police Public Relations Officer ASP Hassan Mohammed Auyo confirmed the incident.
He said, "Last Friday night around eight o'clock, the late Inspector Abdullahi came out from mosque after he had observed his Tarawih prayer. He was discussing with four people in front of his house when two people came on a motorcycle and one of them greeted them and asked them who is Alhaji Abdullahi. He answered in the affirmative. The man brought out a gun and shot him to death instantly."
ASP Hassan added, "The two people ran away on their motorcycle to an unknown destination. They targeted only the late inspector. It wasn't a sporadic shooting. His corpse was taken to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi."
He said few meters away from the scene of the incident, police recovered a magazine loaded with Ak 47 rounds of ammunition and eight expended ammunition.
The police image maker said no arrest had been made but he reiterated the commitment of the police to come out with strategy(s) to arrest the culprits.
Sunday Trust correspondent gathered that the deceased was Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to former Bauchi State Deputy Governor Abdulmalik Mahmood and a classmate of the immediate the past Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Senator Babayo Gamawa, representing Bauchi North Federal Constituency.
The deceased has since been buried according to Islamic rites.
In their condolence messages during a visit the house of the deceased, the two ex-deputy governors prayed God to forgive him and consoled the family.
They described the deceased as an honest, very religious and dedicated police officer.
