Yurkud, Somalia — Clashes sparked Saturday night in the southern region of Gedo between Al Shabaab and Somali government forces backed by Ethiopian troops, Garowe Online reports.

According to local sources, the clashes sparked after Al Shabaab agents ambushed allied forces stationed in Yurkud.

Government officials in the region of Gedo reported that the allied forces successfully repelled the ambush.

"Last night Al Shabaab insurgents attacked the district of Yurkud, they fled after sustaining heavy losses by the hands of the allied forces," said Governor of Gedo Mohamed Abdi Khalil, who spoke to local media.

The governor did not speak about the allied forces' casualties; however local sources in Gedo region said that at least 10 people on both sides were killed in the clashes and another 15 were injured.

The battle for Gedo region has heated up recently as Al Shabaab insurgents continue to mount attacks in the region.
