AN unlicenced driver, who killed a pedestrian and sped off from the scene, was last week fined and jailed for eight months. Conwell Chikwature (42) of Highfield was fined US$200 for two counts and jailed for eight months on another count. He was ordered to pay the fine before the end of this month or risk spending an additional two months in prison if he fails.
Chikwature admitted to three counts of driving without a licence, killing a pedestrian and failure to report the accident to the police.
He appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Rumbidzai Mugwagwa.
She sentenced Chikwature to 12 months, but conditionally set aside four for the next five years.
Prosecutor Ms Karen Kunaka proved that on July 1 this year, Chikwature was driving a Nissan Sunny along New Chitungwiza Road.
He accidentally ran over Tranos Nyowa (40) who died on the spot.
Instead of attending to Nyowa, Chikwature sped off from the scene, but was later arrested and detained at Chitungwiza police station.
