Kenya: Fire Guts Voi School Dorm

Property worth more than Sh12 million was yesterday morning destroyed in a dormitory fire at Voi Secondary Sschool. No one was injured in the fire since students were in class for their morning studies. Students said the fire started at around 7:45am. "The fire spread so fast that we could not salvage anything from the dormitory," said a form two student.

The students said the boys dormitory has been experiencing power hitches and an electric fault could have triggered the fire. Voi DEO Kennedy Machora said the fire has affected 100 students. "There was no unrest at the school therefore we cannot say that the fire was deliberately started by the students," Machora said.

Machora said investigations have been launched into the cause of the fire. The school administration was however not willing to speak to the press. Tension is high in the region following a wave of strikes that has hit most schools. Five secondary schools have been closed down indefinitely following unrest among students who went on a rampage and destroyed property worth millions of shillings.

The schools affected are Kenyatta national school,Timbila secondary school,Mwangeka girls and St. Marys boys secondary school.Early this week, Wundanyi MP Thomas Mwadeghu directed all headteachers in his constituency to expel all strike leaders.
