South Africa: Semenya Sets 800m Season's Best

CASTER Semenya continued her build-up to next month's national championships by winning the women's 800m race at the first Yellow Pages Inter-provincial Challenge in Germiston on Saturday.

Semenya, the world champion, took the lead early on the first lap and held it to the line, recording 2:01.77 to win comfortably.

"This was part of my buildup to Durban [SA Championships]," said Semenya, competing in the colours of Gauteng North.

The 20-year-old, who improved her season's best by more than two seconds, said she hoped to run quicker against stiffer opposition.

"I hope to be at two minutes in Durban and then improve on that in Europe," she said. "What is needed is someone to take the first lap through in 60 seconds."
