Nigeria: Two Months After New Electricity Tariffs, No Free Meters

The free meter deployment promised by the Federal Government is yet to take effect two months after the new electricity tariffs took effect.

On June 1, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) announced an average of 11 percent hike in electricity tariffs and committed to have unmetered customer get metered within 12 to 18 months for free.

Chairman of NERC, Dr Sam Amadi had said the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) are committed to providing meters to their customers between 12 to 18 months starting from June 1.

However, speaking Wednesday in Abuja, Dr Amadi said the financial layout on the procurement of the expected free meters was still being worked out. He appealed to Nigerians to be patient as the outstanding issues were receiving attention and would soon be sorted out.

He said: "We have not finished work on the financial layout for the meter payment as a component of the Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) 2." The MYTO 2 provides that customers would no longer pay for meters as it has been figured into the new tariff. The responsibility is now that of the electricity distribution companies.
