Liberia: Public Hearings On Nat'l Budget Start Today

Information available to this paper has revealed that the Liberian Legislature Joint Committee on Ways, Means and Finance has finally resolved to host its first public hearing on the 2012/13 draft National Budget today, August 7, 2012 in the joint Chambers of the Capitol Building.

The information, which was confirmed by the Press and Public Affairs Director in the House of Representatives Isaac Redd indicates that ministries, corporations and agencies of government are to defend their respective budgetary allotments, starting today. It can be recalled that last week, that Liberian Legislature announced public hearing of the budget, but later conducted the hearing behind closed doors.

However, the joint committee of both the Senate and the House on Ways, Means and Finance will begin public hearings today on the expenditure component of the draft national budget.

Public hearings on the revenue component of the draft budget were held last week Wednesday, August 1, 2012 in the joint chambers, which brought together the ministries of Finance, Transport, and the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority.

"Public hearings will afford line ministries and agencies of government the opportunity to defend their respective appropriations in the 2012/2013 fiscal year budget before members of the joint committee and the public," said Redd.

Government ministries that are expected to be part of today's antennary include: Ministry of Education with the budgetary allotment of US$66,569,418; University of Liberia with allotment of US$11,698,956 and the Ministry of Planning for Economic Affairs, which has an allotment of US $15,386,996.

Other ministries are Agriculture, US$52,761,585; Youth and Sports, US$ $13,480,392, and the Forestry Development Authority with US$ $8,736,146. The hearings continue on Wednesday to Friday with more public institutions lining up to justify their share of the national pie.
