Namibia: Weekend Horseracing Action at Tjakomaue

Tomorrow's much anticipated horse racing at the spacious Tjakomaue racetrack near Farm Dankbaar at Okozonduzu, in the Otjozondjupa Region is expected to deliver earth-shaking action.

Some of the best speeding horses on offer will be fielded, while there could be some surprises in store for the established horses with the threat of the arrival of a few newcomers that include Brave Warriors mentor Norii Kaanjuka's thoroughbred gelding and mare going by the names of Piston and Candle's Girl.

The battles lines are drawn in the exciting shorter distances - the 1000 and 1600 metre sprints where the likes of undisputed champion Into Temptation of Moses Kandjoze, Check Master (Tjakomaue) of Albert Tjihero, Paheja Katjingisiua's Regal Bearing, Serious Sonja, We-Three-Kings of the Angermund stable and Cold War of Emon Freygang.

With lucrative prizes totaling N$60 000, including two Brahman heifers for the winners in the top two races, tension is mounting high with thousands of spectators expected to flock to Farm Dankbaar, Otjomapenda, when the first race gets underway at 10h00 tomorrow morning.

Race organizers are leaving no stone unturned and have roped in the services of a qualified veterinarian George Mutjavikua, while a fully equipped ambulance will also be on standby to treat any potential injuries that may arise.

Strict new rules have been introduced with all jockeys obliged to wear protective headgear and spectacles, while the intake of booze will be strictly off limits. Failure to adhere to the rules will lead to automatic disqualification from the race.

More than 30 horses and their jockeys from Rehoboth, Epukiro, Aminius, Ovitoto and hosts Otjomapenda, will line up in different categories, but the race that has captured the imagination of horseracing enthusiasts is doubtlessly the 1000 metre sprint.

Osyter Bay of Moses Kandjoze is once again the hot favourite to clinch honours in this particular division, but could expect some tough resistance from the likes of Storm in the Tea Cup, Piston, Cold War and Diamond Seeker.

Local residents in that neck of the woods are also expected to cash-in handsomely after the organizers put up talls inside the stadium (free of charge) for potential businesspeople to market and sell their products. Namib Manganese Mining cc and AV Tjihero Farming are the main sponsors of the event.
