Tunisia: Premier Congratulates Mohamed El-Magariaf on His Election as President of Libya's General National Congress

Kasbah — Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali sent, on Friday, a congratulations message to Mohamed Youssef el-Magariaf following his election as the President of the General National Congress (GNC), according to the Prime Ministry's communiqué.

Mr. Jebali said that the election of Mr. el-Magariaf "will certainly help strengthen the process of building up a democratic Libya in such a manner as to meet the aspirations of the Libyan people within the framework of national unity and solidarity".

Prominent opposition leader of Muammar Gadhafi's regime, Mohamed Megaryef native of Eastern Libya and known to be close to Islamists, was elected on Thursday evening, President of the General National Congress (GNC), the new Libyan Assembly formed by the elections of last July 7, by 133 votes against 85 for Independent Liberal member Ali Zidane.
