Liberia: Guineans Impersonate As Liberian Refugees

Reports reaching this paper indicates that Guinean security personnel working with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) are depriving Liberian refugees the chance to obtain resettlement to enable them travel to reside in Europe, America or Australia, by replacing Liberian family names with names of Guinean nationals.

Our source who begged for anonymity because she is an insider, said that in addition, Guinean securities at each refugee center have introduced a measure whereby each family head has been asked to drop three persons from their list, so as to create the space for three Guineans to travel abroad if their chance to travel avails or be denied the processing of their documents.

"The documents of any family group that accepts the scheme is expedited speedily". He added that this scheme has frustrated many Liberians whose family abroad want them to travel, and are sponsoring the program.

Furthermore, our source in Guinea has disclosed that many Liberians wanting to come home have been denied the opportunity of receiving the assistance packages meant for each refugee to enable them return and settle, noting that there are also constant security harassment at refugee camps in that country.

A girl whose name was short listed to travel on the resettlement program has confirmed that as soon as anyone is identified as candidate for the program and their names are displayed on information bulletin boards, it is the normal habit of the Guinean security personnel to go and approach the family head and remind them about their illegal decision to drop three members from his list, so as to allow three Guinean nationals to travel with them,. She added that when the head agrees, first class treatment is given to speed up the process while the entire list of those that refuse are dropped from the program.

According to our source, this illegal directives has become a business between Guineans seeking greener pastures in developed countries and that country's security personnels in the various refugee camps, adding that this ugly situation is hindering the smooth operations of NGOs wishing to aid the suffering Liberians caught up in Guinea to resettle abroad.

It can be recalled that prior to the war many nationals from other African countries especially our neighboring countries with various professions came to this country in search of employment to make the US dollars; as Liberia was considered as small America. More especially there are several Ghanaians can boast of having come to Liberia before traveling to Western Countries for studies.

Our source also observed that there are two Liberian embassy buildings in Bamako, Mali and in each of them no Liberian is employed but foreign nationals who prepare any documents pertaining to Liberia; a situation that has created doubts in the minds of Liberians residing in the Country as to why it should be that way.
