Nigeria: Stop-and-Search - Police Vow to Arrest Bribe Givers

The police yesterday promised to arrest anybody that attempted to offer them money as incentive during stop-and-search exercises and other operations.

The police have recently abolished all roadblocks mounted on the roads on the grounds that officers take monies in bribe from commercial drivers but could do stop-and-search from time to time.

Inspector General Mohammed Abubakar said at a meeting with the members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Abuja that any driver that give money to policemen during stop-and-search exercises will be arrested and charged with attempts to bribe public officer.

"Anybody that bribe police will be arrested while the policeman that demanded for bribe will also be arrested," he said.

The President of the union, Najeem Usman Yasin, asked the police to always work with them in crime detection processes.

Meawhile, police spokesman Frank Mba said the IG has ordered officers to strengthen security during the Sallah celebrations in order to "ensure a peaceful and incident-free Sallah celebration."
