Nigeria: NUT Threatens Strike Over Unpaid Teachers' Allowance

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) yesterday issued a September deadline for defaulting states to pay the 27.5 per cent allowance to their members or face an indefinite strike.

The National President of union, Mr Michael Olukoya, gave the deadline in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

Olukoya said that the union had resolved that the affected states would proceed on strike if nothing was done at the expiration of the deadline.

According to him, the struggle for the Teachers Special Allowance started since 2008, "and at the last count, 17 states have yet to comply with the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Olukoya said the proposed two weeks ultimatum earlier planned for defaulting state governments on July 10 was not carried out due to the intervention of the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa'i. NAN
