Kenya: Crocodile Kills Expectant Mum in Mbeere

A 22-year-old expectant woman was killed by a crocodile at the Kiambere hydroelectricity producing dam in Mbeere North. Residents of Mutitu village watched helplessly as Angelina Njoki struggled to release herself from the crocodile's grip. The villagers screamed as they watched in horror Njoki was devoured by the reptile.

Njoki was fetching water from the dam when she was attacked. Community development officer Dickson Njiru, who was at the scene, said they watched helplessly as the crocodile dragged Njoki into the water. He said they made frantic calls to the Kenya Wildlife Service personnel to help rescue Njoki but it was too late.

By yesterday evening, residents were still milling around the dam with the hope that the body would be retrieved. The villages who gathered in small groups and talked in hashed tones said last year, another woman was killed by a crocodile from the dam. Others said a man lost his hand after he was attacked by a crocodile early this year. They called on the government to provide piped water.
