Tunisia: Culture and Information Union Denounces Nominations Based on 'Political Allegiance'

Tunis — The General Culture and Information Union stemming from the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) denounced Saturday any "policy of subjugation" of the public media, expressing refusal of the recent appointments in Dar Assabah and the National Television based on "political allegiance."

The Union also criticises, in a communiqué, "the reluctance" of the government in the implementation of the agreement of March 6, 2012, pertaining to the consecration of the autonomy of the National Television and the creation of a board of directors representing all its departments.

The communiqué underlines the tergiversation of the government in implementing the decrees 115 and 116, adding that "this government profits from the legal vacuum to carry on its policy of nominations without prior consultation of the Union structures."

The Union calls on the journalists to boost their cohesion around the Union structures to deal with these practices and defend an independent public information.
