Photo: UN Photo/Tim McKulka El-Fasher — Over 2,500 houses and a number of government facilities collapsed on Saturday due to the heavy rains and floods in El-Fasher.
Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that the torrential rains on Saturday lasted more than three hours, which resulted in the massive collapse of homes and government facilities. In addition, a bridge collapsed which separated the IDP camps from the city.
Witnesses said the the water flooded the western market and the market of Hajer Gaddoa next to the stadium in the downtown area. A witness pointed out that transport between the northern and southern parts of the town is now only possible via one bridge which is located in the downtown area.
IDP camps were severely hit by the floodings; more than 300 homes collapsed in Zamzam camp, 150 in Abu Shouk camp and another 100 in Abuja camp. An activist of Zamzam camp told Radio Dabanga that rainwater flooded the camps and led to the displacement of more than 300 families.
In addition to damaging food stocks and properties of the displaced. The activist appealed to the local authorities and humanitarian organizations to speed up the help for IDPs in Zamzam camp.
Mayor Yahya Mohamed Adam, from Abu Shouk IDP camp, told Radio Dabanga that the heavy rains and floods led to the collapse of more than 150 homes. He emphasized the complete collapse of homes in square 23. An activist in Abuja camp added that more than a hundred families were left displaced as a result of the rains and floods.
