Benin — Minister of Interior Abba Moro has lambasted prisons comptroller Edo State Jimoh Ewulo for the careless manner he handled the jail break incident in his territory.
Expressing his displeasure in Benin yesterday, the minister, who was in Benin to inspect the Oko prison, was said to have indicted officials of the prisons at a closed door meeting for not being proactive.
Sources at the meeting said the minister was disgusted at the conflicting reports on the incident between the comptroller and state Commissioner of Police Mr. Olayinka Balogun.
The comptroller, Mr. Ewulo, had on Monday confirmed the escape of eight inmates and the arrest of four other inmates who attempted to escape; but the State Commissioner of police, Olayinka Balogun claimed that no inmate escaped, adding that two inmates who attempted to escape were arrested.
During the meeting, the minister was said to have blamed the comptroller and the prison warders for not being proactive, just as it was said to have observed that the opening on the prisons wall through which the inmates escaped was caused by blast.
