Nigeria: On Jonathan's Contract With Ministers

"Nigerians expect a better deal from government and that is what they shall get, under my watch. And that is what each and every one of you must see as your primary goal". This statement resonated with a sober theme in members of the federal executive council, on Wednesday, August 22, as it came from the president, while compelling all the ministers to sign a performance contract with him. The president innovated this to drive it home to every member of his cabinet that his government would not be prepared to make excuses to the Nigerian people for any failure.

The thrill in this new path of governance is in its novelty, much as it is the spirit behind it. While it is an unexplored path of keeping the ministers on their toes as well as a swirling Sword of Damocles over the head of any indolent minister, it speaks strongly of the president's determination to make the desired difference in the area of quality governance and service delivery to the citizens. It underscores the president's realization that he, as well as all members of his government are obligated and subordinated to the ruled.
