Nigeria: Paralympics - Nigerian Wins First Gold, Breaks World Record

Nigerian Yakubu Adesokan wins gold and sets a new world record in the Men’s 48kg Powerlifting on day 1 of the London 2012 Paralympic Games

Nigeria's Yakubu Adesokan has taken gold for Nigeria in the men's -48kg powerlifting with a world record lift of 180kg.

Adesokan was a full 10kg ahead of silver medallist Vladimir Balynedc of Russia, while Taha Abdelmagid of Egypt claimed bronze with his 165kg effort.

There was British interest in the final, with Anthony Peddle lifting 140kg on his way to eighth place.

His lift was 140kg, some 25kg short of medal contention.
