Mali: U.S. Congratulates Mali and Calls for Elections

The United States in Press Statement, welcomed the formation of an interim Government of National Unity in Mali adding that the inclusion of a diverse group of political parties and civil society actors in the interim government will strengthen the stability of the political situation in Bamako.

The goal of restoring Mali's territorial integrity and governance in the north will best be achieved by a democratically elected, stable and credible government, with the support of the Malian people and the ability to engage fully with all partners.

The U.S therefore urged the Transitional Government to organize elections as soon as possible and, working with ECOWAS, to undertake necessary military reform and to engage in negotiations with moderate groups in the north so as to better promote security in the country and defend its territorial integrity, as they renew their calls for the National Committee for the Restoration of Democracy.
