Nigeria: The Unforgettable Deeper Life Youth Choir Conference

It was a great and memorable time as youths from across the length and breadth of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, gathered at the Deeper Life Bible Church Regional Worship Centre, Kado, Abuja for the Youth Choir Conference organised by the church.

The Youth Choir Conference was a week-long and intensive period of exhaustive spiritual, academic, music and mental development programme for the youths. The conference was a breath-taking moment as the 'young eagles' feast in the nest of the sprawling halls and glamorously looking auditorium that was beautifully decorated with glittering and colourful flowers of different shapes and sizes that strategically positioned to add more scintillating view as the sparkling curtains of different designs and colours adorned the background of the auditorium made it an unforgettable sight to behold.

Christened 'Excellence 2012', the conference brought together old youth choir members and those who newly joined the choir from Gwagwalada to Nyanya, Lugbe to Kuje, and Bwari to Abuja City, which are regions under the FCT Church. It was fully loaded with resourceful activities, ranging from spiritual rebirth, character transformation, theory and rudiments of music, voice training, principles and academic excellence, building conviction, musical instrument skills, song rehearsals, interactive session, music appreciation and prayer impartation.

The State Overseer of the Deeper Bible Church, Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Abuja, Pastor Rauf Hassan, who was represented by the Bwari Region Overseer of the church, Pastor Sunday Udosen church said that the General Superintendent of the church, Pastor William Kumuyi has this vision of harnessing the potentials of youths in the church for the work of God and to be useful to themselves and the society, which also the Abuja church exactly did for its youths.

"The church has been organising musical conferences like this, and the Deeper Life Church in the FCT deemed it necessary at this time to organise such conference to discover and develop the untapped and unused potentials in the area of godly music, in order to reach out with the gospel to youths who needs Christ in their lives. The church is also serious in developing the youths spiritually, academically and mentally," Udosen said.

The GS, Pastor Kumuyi ministered to the youths via recorded messages, which revealed to the youths their purpose of being brought into the world by God. The impact of the messages was great as most of the youths were broken-down and surrendered their lives to God for transformation and service to God. While those whose spiritual lives were cold were ignited again by the fire of revival, and their joy knew no bounds.

The Region Overseer of Nyanya Region, Pastor Augustine Onokor said the church deemed it necessary to train the youths in the art of gospel music which would be used to reach out with the gospel to other youths gripped by Satan and sin.

"Our gathering of the youths in the church is to train them in gospel music, and also a lot of impact has been made in their spiritual lives as revival has taken place in their lives. This will not be the last conference the church will organise for the youth choir; it will be a continuous programme. Our regions funded the programme, and everything went on smoothly. In fact, the parents of the youths came to see what was going on and they were amazed and excited about the conference for one week," Onokor said.

Also speaking was the FCT State Youth Coordinator, Pastor Olusegun Alabi said that the week-long conference was to raise a standard youth choir that will use their songs to harvest souls into the kingdom of God. "The purpose of the Youth Choir Conference is to bring up the young ones, and singing for the Lord, just as David in the Bible did. We kept them for one week because we want to raise a standard youth choir unto the Lord, and also we do not want to do a shoddy job, and make sure that they come up and sing very well for the Lord.

He promised that more powerful conferences are on the way as the church has put everything in place to regularly organise such programmes. "This is just the beginning more conferences are still coming, and it may be next year. Our goal of organising this youth choir conference is to reach out to youths out there under the bondage of the devil, and the song they are trained with is a Christian song that will affect souls, because the youths outside the church loves music, that is why God gave us the vision we are accomplishing now," Alabi said.

The wife of the FCT State Overseer of the Church, Mrs Veronica Hassan expressed gratitude to the God for the success of the conference, and explained the essence of the vision of the church for organising the conference. "We actually thank the Lord for the vision of the church. A church that has no vision for the youths has no future, and for this reason we discovered that our youths need to be raised up so they can be what they ought to be, and as youths they are strong according to the word of God, and they can do great things for God. We saw that this is the time to help this children to appreciate the things God has deposited in them, and to bring it out in them before the devil begin to use them," Hassan said.

She said that God has imparted very well in the lives of the youths both spiritually and musically, as those whose spiritual lives was down became renewed and refreshed, and also acquired skills in playing musical instruments.

The FCT State Youth Choir Master, Mr. Tope Ojeme has this to say, "The essence of this programme is to inspire young people to do the right thing. We are talking about holiness of life. And as our GS, Pastor Kumuyi's logo is holiness of life. We had a lot of packages put together for this programme that has been released into the lives of the youths. We owe a lot of gratitude to our GS Pastor WF Kumuyi who have been the major source of inspiration for all these, and also to our State Overseer, Pastor R.A Hassan who God has mightily used, by giving his support. We have been able to see that character transformation, academic excellence and faith which is very important." Speaking on challenges encountered in organising the programme and making it a success, Ojeme said there were no challenges as such, because he and his leaders looked up to God. He also said some youths who were not members also attended the programme and became born-again during the programme.

As the conference continued from the first day, entering the second day and up to the fourth day many youths at the conference knew the names of some musical instruments they did not know before. Also touched and practiced how to play instruments like the double-bass, trombone, clarinet, viola, and others. Some of them were enlisted to be part of the youth choir orchestra, and performed wonderfully on stage, and also sang in different parts for the first time.

The musical instrument and skills session was very practical as all the youths attended the session and gave full attention as the various instructors painstakingly taught them. It also ignited their passion that led to their quick understanding and application of the skill acquired as they fell in love with the musical instruments. Eventually, they became instrumentalists before the end of the conference, whereby some of them will be playing musical instruments at the Youth Success Camp coming up on September 5, 2012 at the various group of districts in the FCT Deeper Life Bible Church.

Some of them expressed their gratitude to God for the timely conference the church organised for them, especially during the long vacation. Master Stephen Nyamja said, "It has been wonderful, and one of its kind, as in a very long time now I have not had it like this. I used to play some instruments, but in this conference my skills were sharpened and I also played among the orchestra. I played the violin and also the keyboard." Simpa Emmanuel said, "It has been a great time in this conference. I was actually preparing for my exam, and the preparation did not hinder me from attending the conference. I had my sanctification experience restored again in this programme, and I learnt on instrument maintenance. It will be exciting if the church continues to organise this programme for us, because it will help develop us in every aspect of our lives." Shalom Yayok said,"I am very grateful to the leadership of the church to organise the Youth Choir Conference, I have benefited a lot, and I am going home with the message of transformation, which is accepting the Lord Jesus Christ into one's life." Osiagor Ruth said, "I was invited to attend the conference by my fellow youths, and my life has been impacted spiritually, musically and academically. Our teachers taught us a lot of things in music, and I have learnt how to sing and play some instruments."

The conference was indeed timely as the youths were on a long vacation, escaping negative societal influence and peer pressure, and also unnecessary browsing and wandering. They were properly engaged with variety of activities lined up for the week-long conference. Also they were adequately fed with different dishes, and none of them complained. There was absolute obedience to their leaders and gave their cooperation.

The conference was given maximum support by the leadership of the church, and the best came out of the programme. Nothing was lacked right from the day the programme started and closed. Every participant benefited from the programme.

The conference was also attended by the leadership of the various regions and groups as the youths sang according to the regions they belong to, rendering beautiful renditions that were soul steering and heart-warming. Then the whole state youth choir ministered in song, which was accompanied by some musical instruments adding colour and beauty to the event.
