Kenya: Authority Vows Crackdown On Unlicensed Ships

7 September 2012

The Kenya Maritime Authority will crackdown on unlicensed vessels on Kenyan territorial waters. KMA director General Nancy Karigithu yesterday said most vessel operators had failed to meet the August 30 registration deadline. She said all vessels should adhere to the Merchant Shipping Act of 2009 which allows only Kenyan registered vessels to operate on the country's territorial waters.

The law was gazetted by Transport minister Amos Kimunya in May. "We need to know who is operating on our waters for smooth operations and safety precautions. We have to bring order in the sea just like the roads," said Karigithu. She said only those who have sought an extension from the authority will be exempted adding that KMA has already approved some company requests.
