Uganda: Government Rehabilitates Bridges to Ease Traffic Flow

More bridges on the national road network are being upgraded to meet the increased traffic volumes across the country. Some of the reconstructed bridges were constructed decades ago when traffic flow was still low, while others have been eroded by heavy rains.

Daniel Alinange, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) spokesperson, said they have allocated funds this financial year for emergency replacement of collapsed bridges at Ntungwe on Katunguru-Ishasha and Mitaano on Rukungiri- Kanungu roads.

He said the above bridges collapsed recently under the heavy cargo trucks leaving, Kanungu cut off Mitaano.

Other bridges that are being reconstructed include that of Awoja in Soroti though the works are being disturbed by the current heavy rains in the area.

Others that have been rehabilitated include Kaichumu Bridge in Kazo, Kiruhura district, Bulyamusenyu connecting Nakaseke to Masindi, which is in the final stages of completion, Muzizi in Kyenjonjo and Aswa Bridge.
