Nigeria: Residents Desert Homes As Kaduna River Over Flows

Kaduna — Residents in communities near the bank of Kaduna river have deserted their homes as a result of an overflow.

Our correspondent reports that people in communities like, Rafinguza, Angwan Rimi, Kigo road, Kabala Kostain, Nasarawa Kakuri, Hayin Danmani, all along the Kaduna river bank are now leaving in fear. Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday, a resident of Kigo road, Elisha Yunana, said some residents moved out of their houses because they were scared of the water flowing from the river.

"Just look at how the water has damaged the road. Most of the houses you are seeing here have been soaked with water. It is a yearly phenomenon, but this year, the water refused to dry, making our area swampy," he added.

The Public Relations Officer of Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Zakari Adamu Abubakar, who confirmed the development, said officials of the agency visited the areas and advised residents to leave.

"We are still enlightening people in disaster prone areas on the need to leave such areas or be safety conscious," he said.
