SIX-TIME league champions Rayon Sport overpowered ten-man Mukura 1-0 to win the inaugural Agaciro Development Fund tournament which came to a climax yesterday at Amahoro stadium.
After a four-day action-packed tournament, the Blues won the first trophy of the season, the club's first piece of silverware since 2005 when they won the Peace Cup.
The only goal of the match was scored by DR Congo import Papy Kamanzi on the 60th minute after overrunning Mukura's defence.
Enroute to the final, Rayon Sport started with a 1-0 victory over AS Kigali last Thursday. They qualified to the semi final where they thumped Amagaju 6-1.
Mukura also had a fair tournament beating Muhanga 10-9 on penalties in the preliminary round before seeing off SC Kiyovu 1-0 in the semifinal. Pre-tournament favourites APR and Police suffered early exits. Police were the first to be eliminated following a 7-8 loss on penalties against Musanze, while APR lost 2-4 on penalties against Amagaju. Rayon Sport duo of Kamanzi and Jerome Sina finished the tournament as top goal scorers with three goals apiece.
A total of Frw5.01 million was reported to have been raised from gate collections by press time and the money will be handed over to the Ministry of Sports which will in turn, submits it along with collections from other sporting federations as the sports' fraternity's contribution to the Agaciro Development Fund, which was created last month as a home-grown initiative to help accelerate national development.
The total contributions towards the fund surpassed Frw17 billion since the official launch of the country.
The Agaciro Development Fund is a solidarity fund that has been initiated by Rwandans to improve the level of financial autonomy of Rwanda as a nation.
The Agaciro Development Fund sets the tone that Rwandans will work together to drive their own development; giving the entire Rwandan population a higher level of direct ownership in the nation's projects.
