Egypt: EOHR and ANHRI End Their Joint Third Workshop On 'Freedom of Expression and Thought in the International Conventions, and the Libel Cases'

press release

Cairo — The 3rd joint workshop between EOHR and ANHRI discussed the differentiation between freedom of expression and thought and the libel cases, where it included a deep discussion over the available definitions, restrictions and controls in the local and international conventions.

The workshop, which lasts for four hours, was attended by a number of 25 journalists and lawyers from different backgrounds, where the discussion was surrounding the main criteria and principles should be adopted by journalists, to avoid any of the accusations listed in the 19th article of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The workshop was moderated by Mr. Samir El Bagourry, the well known lawyer and activist, who delivered a speech on the foundation of the international conventions and laws on political, economic, social and cultural rights, differentiating between the nature of the political rights, and the other rights.

It is worth mentioning that this workshop was held in the framework of the "Media Coverage Assessment" project, held jointly between EOHR & ANHRI, through which a fortnightly publication is issued containing a quantitative and qualitative analysis for different brands of press foundations and institutions. This project is based on the adoption of EOHR & ANHRI to the new trend believing in the importance of the role of the media in developing the society, affecting the preferences and forming the awareness of the people.
