Uganda: Tenants Close Shops Over Rent Increment

Tenants at Mukwano arcade in Kampala have closed their shops protesting a 20% increment in rent.

The tenants argue that the increment is not fair and vow not to pay rent until the figure is revised.

According to the new rent structure issued by the estate mangers, traders transacting business inside the arcade will have to pay sh2.4m from sh2m and the outer shops sh6m.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander Andrew Felix Kaweesa who is at scene has called for calm as the tenants' leaders hold talks with the estates managers.

Mukwano arcade is a property of Mukwano group of companies.
