NOMINATIONS for the 2012 Annual National Sports Awards will close at the end of October with the awards ceremony scheduled for December.
Sports Commission's corporate communications officer, Tirivashe Nheweyembwa, yesterday said the cut off date would allow the judges' panel to sift through the nominees. Swimmer Kirsty Coventry is the reigning Sportsperson of the Year award winner and could once again be in the running.
Coventry was a medal hopeful for Zimbabwe at the recent Olympic Games but she retained home empty handed.
Another Olympic Games athlete, Cuthbert Nyasango could be nominated for the Sportsman of the Year award.
The shortlist of finalists will be unveiled on November 18.
"The nomination process for the aspiring candidates by the National Sport Associations and the public will close on October 30 to allow for the Judges' Panel to adjudicate and shortlist the candidates," he said.
The event to honour the outstanding sporting excellence has been tentatively set for the Rainbow Towers in the capital.
