Sierra Leone: Calls for UN to Empower Independent Candidates

There have been widespread expectations in the country that NEC boss, Dr. Christiana Thorpe, would soon release guidelines for those wishing to be independent candidates, and that she would spearhead a dialogue with the UN office in the country for independent candidates to be funded as has been done to other political parties.

Many of the parties have been observed to indulge in corruption especially by selling symbols to underserved candidates, which has invoked widespread anger in the country. Some citizens think in the spirit of fair play, the UN should fund independent candidates who would serve as a third force between the two traditional parties.
